I’ve been reminiscing about my undergraduate studies, which inspired today’s collection of sketchbook pages.
In art school, I was encouraged to emphasize my thoughts and opinions, making my artistic vision as individualized as possible. Developing a unique personal style was the objective of many assignments and courses. In hindsight, I can see how this training has benefited me. But at the time, I worried if I was being taught to think in a self-centered way.
My sketchbook is probably the closest I’ll get to developing an introspective art style focused on my personal view of the world. But even then, I have always used it as a tool for exploring the world beyond myself. Our planet is vast, diverse, and full of new things to discover—so why not look outward instead of inward?
Animals have always embodied this for me, and I’ve never failed to find something new in the animal kingdom.
