Hi everyone! My newsletters will look a little different going forward because I have migrated from Mailchimp to Substack. Despite the new look, it’s still me— Missy Dunaway, writing you from my art studio in Cape Elizabeth, Maine.
Events & Announcements
I’m on Substack
My newsletter is now powered by Substack, and I plan to pick up the frequency. You can expect to receive bi-monthly emails with images of my latest artwork, news about upcoming events, and insights into developing projects.
Monthly webinars are rolling again
Substack allows subscribers to upgrade to a paid newsletter for $8 per month that offers exclusive benefits— in my case, access to my monthly webinar series, which resumes on September 19th!
These classes will be informal and feel like a studio drop-in. During each hour-long session, I’ll work on a painting using acrylic ink in a Moleskine sketchbook, guiding viewers step-by-step through my process and answering questions in real time. Whether you want to paint with me or simply observe, this is your chance to connect and create. What are my webinars like? Take a look.
We’ll meet on the third Thursday of every month at 7 PM US EST (NYC). I will send a Zoom link the day before each meetup. Mark your calendars for 2024:
September 19, 2024
October 17, 2024
November 21, 2024
December 19, 2024
*These classes will be recorded and available to view at your convenience!
Other benefits when you upgrade to paid
Paid subscribers will also get a weekly email featuring five high-resolution scans from my sketchbooks, ranging from my oldest in 2008 to the one currently on my desk. The series will focus on art images with minimal written content, designed to feel like you've stumbled upon my sketchbook and started flipping through it on your own. I want these emails to be unfiltered, intimate glimpses juxtaposing my earliest pages with my latest work.
If you've been following my sketchbook practice, enjoyed my book, or miss my regular Instagram and Tumblr content, this upgrade is for you!
Fresh Off The Easel
I am slowly but surely creating a new body of work entirely in oil paint. The painting below depicts Stonington, Maine and is on its way to Portland Art Gallery for the September general exhibition:
The Walk Back (Stonington), 40x30 in, oil on panel
I see it as an update to a favorite sketchbook page depicting Brooklyn, NY, in 2013:
The Birds of Shakespeare
After a long maternity leave, my Birds of Shakespeare painting series is back on schedule! The greylag goose and osprey recently joined the flock. The buttons below link you to the articles I wrote examining each bird’s literary significance and early modern cultural context. The osprey’s article includes a rare personal anecdote.
Sketchbook Snapshot
Since this newsletter highlights my latest paintings, I thought looking back at some older work might be fun. Here are sketchbook pages from 2011 that you may not have seen before.
Teaching & Tutorials
In addition to my monthly webinar series, you can also purchase a recorded course on my website. Browse the collection:
Better yet, subscribe to Creativebug and take more classes there. The Creativebug team in San Francisco beautifully filmed and edited these classes. You can also explore the rest of Creativebug’s artist roster when you subscribe. This year, I’ve learned paper marbling with Mercedez Rex and sashiko mending with Lisa Solomon.
See You Later!
I know many friends and old acquaintances receive my newsletter, and I hope you are doing well. I would love to keep in touch, so please reply to this newsletter to connect directly. I am not the most timely in my email responses as I am probably chasing after my 9-month-old, but I love receiving social emails and will eventually respond.
I wish you a lovely August, wherever this email finds you.
Cheers,
Missy
So happy you’re here!
I’m so excited! I love your webinars!
